The brief was to create an additional 9 holes which would serve the following functions:
- Relieve the playing pressure on the existing holes
- Attract green fee income in competition with nearby courses
- Complement the character of the original nine holes to provide a new preferred 18 hole layout with the clubhouse at the centre.
Muckhart Golf Club Landscape Development
The landscape design concept for the Muckhart Golf Club development was emphatically site-led, with the existing environment dictating the final solution.
- All greens and tees have been positioned to provide a close fit with the existing landform, and to ensure that the distinctive character of the site and its impressive views are brought into play wherever possible.
- Fairways follow the better drained ground, with green and tee sites generally on the elevated ridges or hummocks.
- The major part of the wetland area has been conserved, and on holes 2,3,5 and 6 plays a strong role in the strategy of playing the course.
- Tree and shrub planting has been used sparingly, for example to accentuate specific elements of the terrain, to soften hard edges of existing tree plantations, and to strengthen the boundary hedges and tree belts.
- The signature hole is No 3, a strong par three of 220 yards from the medal tee, playing across wetland to an elevated green, with an attractive backdrop formed by a grove of mature birch.
