In the summer of 2006, ASH design + assessment was appointed by SHETL to undertake an environmental assessment of possible corridors for a proposed connection between Kintyre and Hunterston in Ayrshire. ASH worked closely with Briggs Marine and Environmental Services (BMES) to establish a variety of potential overhead line, underground cable and sub-sea cable options.
Following consideration of the potential environmental impacts of these options, a preferred route was developed by ASH and BMES, involving an overhead transmission line rebuild between Carradale substation and Cour Bay and a sub-sea cable route from Cour Bay to Portencross (Ayrshire), with an underground cable route from Portencross to Hunterston substation.
In February 2007, a Public Exhibition was held at Carradale Village Hall to present the results of these studies to local communities on the Kintyre Peninsula, and to obtain any views which the residents of these communities may hold on the preferred route.
Modifications to the number of connection opportunities on the Kintyre Peninsula have, at present, restricted further investigations into the preferred route being carried out.
