Our Glasgow School of Art -trained tour guide gave us a tantalising taste of the landscape architectural and architectural highlights of both West and East Berlin, from the staggering modern architecture of the Sony Centre at Potsdamer Platz to iconic older monuments such as the Brandenburg Gate. Sobering memories of Berlin's not-too distant past such as the former headquarters of the Luftwaffe, the bombed remains of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, remnants of the Berlin Wall and the (rather poor) mock-up of "Checkpoint Charlie" reminded us all of the pivotal role this fascinating city has played in recent world history.
We also viewed a selection of Parks, ancient (the Tiergarten- Berlin's Hyde Park) and modern (the Mauerpark, or Wall Park) - a popular - if controversial - park created around a section of the Berlin Wall. Opinions in ASH were divided on this one!
After all that thought-provoking study, what better way to round off the trip than sampling the local food and beer at the Cafe Einstein on Friedrichstraße.
Prost!
