Anthony John Rush

A founding Director of Harris Rush Associates in 1993, and co-founder of the ASHRA Group in 1999, Anthony Rush's career in the construction industry spans over 40 years.

Starting his career with Alfred McAlpine in power station superstructure in the 1960's, Anthony then changed direction and worked for a number of contractors in roads and tunnels and was also employed by the Greater London Council in Strategic Planning. As a Director and Unit Manager of Balfour Beatty (Construction) Ltd in the 1970's, he was responsible for the overall management of entry into the motorway market and responsible for developing that business to an annual turnover of £30 million.

In the 1980's, acting as senior executive in tarmac Quarry Products Limited, Anthony was:

  • Director in Tarmac Roadstone Ltd
  • Managing Director with Tarmac Roadstone (Scotland) Ltd
  • Chairman with Tarmac Roadstone (Northwest) Ltd

He was involved in directing many new developments including Greenfield quarry projects and was Chairman BACMI Scotland 1986-1989 and a National Negotiator Roadstone Industry NJIC.

In the 1990's Anthony was Chief Operating Officer & Group Director of Lilly Plc and developed Lilly as an international contractor and a significant Builder and road builder. Anthony was also chairman of Hatfield Developments and Eden Homes.

Having formed his own sole trader consultancy practice in 1993, Anthony acted as Managing Director of Shanks McEwan Ltd Construction Ltd and a member of the Shanks McEwan PLC's operating board as part of the restructuring process undertaken by that company.

Using his track record in developing businesses, Anthony has acted for various clients in solving problems and settling disputes in the construction and waste management fields. He has been extensively involved in evolving remediation / development strategies for brownfield sites and he also advises a number of Norwegian companies trading in the UK.

Most recently, acting as Chairman of Barr Holdings and Executive Deputy Chairman of Barr Holdings Ltd, Anthony led the change in the Company over a three and a half year period turning a loss of £8.2 million to an expected profit in excess of £7. Turn around was achieved by focusing on and developing core activities. Shareholders' Funds have increased from £18 million to £30 million. As well as turning the company's financial fortunes around Anthony has also instigated fundamental changes in the Company's culture and Health & Safety practices.  The Company has now been sold achieving a successful exit for shareholders.
